Where to Stay

When it comes to finding the perfect place to stay on the Big Island of Hawaii, options abound, catering to every traveler's preferences.

  • Hilo - The rainy side of the island. Stay on this side and you'll have jungle-esque views and a local experience. In Hilo, immerse yourself in the island's rich culture and lush landscapes by staying in a cozy bed and breakfast nestled along the Hamakua Coast or opt for a boutique hotel in the heart of downtown, offering easy access to local attractions like the Farmer's Market and Rainbow Falls.
  • Kona - The sunny side of the island. This side of the island is definitely the more frequent stop for tourists. For those craving luxury and relaxation, indulgent resorts along the Kona Coast beckon with their gorgeous ocean views, world-class amenities, stunning sunny beaches, and proximity to iconic landmarks like the Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park.

Whether you choose the vibrant energy of Kona or the laid-back charm of Hilo, your accommodation on the Big Island promises an unforgettable Hawaiian getaway.

Getting Around the Island

Exploring the island's vast and diverse landscapes is best done with a rental car. The Big Island's size surpasses all other Hawaiian Islands combined, and public transportation may lack the flexibility needed to fully experience all the island has to offer. Explore the island at your own pace, with a rental vehicel. Opting for a 4WD rental enables access to remote beaches, rainforests, and volcanic terrain.

Navigating the island's well-maintained roads and highways is straightforward, facilitating easy exploration between regions and attractions. Drive safely, especially on winding roads during heavy rainfall.
