The Essentials

First and foremost, let's talk about all the essential items you'll need while traveling in Europe.

  • Phone, Tablet, Laptop - Always must bring items for me.
  • Charger and Adapters - Europe uses different electriacal outlets that have a different voltage than US outlets. You'll need type C adapters to use European outlets. But this won't necessarily save your electronics, you'll want to make sure you're bringing only dual voltage electronics or get a voltage converter & adapter to use. Don't worry, most phones, tablets, and laptops are all dual voltage. The items you'll want to check are hair straighteners, hair dryers, curling irons, portable chargers, electric razors, and electric toothbrushes.
  • Headphones - Great for use on the plane or train rides. I always take my noise cancelling headphones.
  • Summer Clothes - See below for more in depth summer clothes recommendations.
  • Comfortable Shoes - You'll likely be doing a lot of walking, so make sure you have comfortable walking shoes. The last time I was in Europe we walked up to 5-10 miles each day, and my partner actually wore down the bottoms of a pair of sneakers.
  • Portable Charger - You'll probably be using your phone a lot for directions, photos, and translations, so make sure you can charge on-the-go with a portable charger and cord.
  • Reusable Water Bottle - I take a reusable water bottle with me wherever I travel. With all the walking you end up doing in Europe, you'll be glad you have this. I absolutely LOVE my Ello water bottle, I personally use these everyday! They come in 3 sizes, many colors, they're well insulated, and have an antimicrobial mouthpeice.
  • Sunglasses - Make sure to bring your favorite pair of sunnies.
  • Medications - Make sure to bring all you're daily prescribed medications and supplements. I also bring some overt-the-counter medicines, like benadryl and pepto-bismol, just so I have it on hand if needed, and have to go try to find anything - I just don't like to waste any of my precious time abroad.
  • Toiletries - I usually bring a travel-sized shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Toothbrush and toothpaste are always a must. Deodorant, hair styling supplies, and other various personal hygiene products.
  • Skincare - Skincare is always a must. I always at lest bring face wash and lotion. I usually bring my niacinimide serum and azelaic acid. If I'll be wearing make up, I'll also bring my acne skincare along - adapelene and pimple patches.
  • Sunscreen - If you're wandering around Europe, you're definitely going to get a lot of sun exposure, so don't get sun-burnt, use sunscreen! Make sure it's reef-safe.
  • Makeup - I usually pack light on makeup, because I like a super quick and natural look while in Europe.
  • Hair Straightener - Make sure it's dual voltage or you have a voltage converter to use. I highly recommend this straightener, it's the one I personally use.
  • Travel Towel - This one sounds a bit weird, I know, but I've been to several Airbnbs and hostels in Europe that don't supply towels. Plus, it's nice to have with you in the summertime, for those coastal stops where you might visit a beach. I like these antimicrobial towels.

What Bags to Pack

Embarking on a journey to Europe requires thoughtful consideration when it comes to choosing the right bags for your travels. Here's a guide to help you select the perfect bags for packing:

  1. Carry-On Luggage: Opt for a versatile carry-on suitcase or backpack that meets airline regulations. Look for features like multiple compartments, sturdy wheels, and durable materials to withstand the rigors of travel. A well-designed carry-on ensures easy access to essentials during transit and smooth navigation through airports and train stations. I persoanlly like an under-sized rolling suitcase, like this one or this one, because I like to pack as light as possible, especially if we'll be moving around Europe instead of staying at one destination.

  2. Backpack or Daybag: Invest in a comfortable daypack or backpack to accompany you. Choose a lightweight design with padded straps for comfort during travel. Look for features like water bottle pockets, secure compartments for valuables, and RFID-blocking technology for added security. If you choose a compact design, you can also use this to take items on day trips while abroad.

  3. Crossbody or Shoulder Bag: A crossbody or shoulder bag is essential for keeping your valuables secure while exploring bustling city streets or visiting tourist attractions. Opt for a compact yet spacious bag with anti-theft features such as slash-resistant materials, RFID-blocking tech, and locking zippers. Choose a versatile style that will go with any outfit you bring and seamlessly transitions from day to night, allowing you to explore with peace of mind.

  4. Packing Cubes or Organizers: Maximize space and stay organized with packing cubes or organizers. These handy accessories help compartmentalize clothing, shoes, and accessories within your luggage, making it easy to locate items and keep your belongings tidy throughout your trip. Choose lightweight and compressible options to optimize packing efficiency.

  5. Foldable Tote or Duffel Bag: If you're like me and you love to shop, consider packing a foldable tote or duffel bag for additional storage or souvenir shopping during your travels. These collapsible bags take up minimal space in your luggage when not in use but provide ample room for extra belongings on the return journey. Opt for durable materials and a compact design that easily fits into your suitcase or backpack.

Selecting the right bags for your trip to Europe ensures you're well-prepared for any adventure that comes your way. Whether navigating bustling city streets, exploring historic landmarks, or embarking on scenic day trips, having the right luggage ensures a seamless and enjoyable travel experience.

What To Wear

You'll want to dress for the weather, the summer months can get warm, and most of Europe doesn't do A/C. Make sure you're packing items to keep you cool, along with some layers in case you're in a cooler area, or wandering about in the evenings.
